What “No Fly Zone”?
By: Daniel Nardini
It seemed like months ago that the United States, with its NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) allies Great Britain and France started to bomb the crap out of Tripoli and the Libyan government under Muamar Gaddhafi in an effort to “protect civilians” in the rebel-held city of Benghazi. Actually it was months ago. The original intent of the whole affair was to stop Gaddhafi from taking Benghazi and slaughtering the whole population.
At least this was the original intent under United Nations’ resolution 1970. It has become obvious that this is not what NATO nor U.S. President Barack Obama had in mind. Their intention was from the very beginning to get rid of Gaddhafi. Their whole intention was to put Libya into the hands of rebels we really do not know. Their whole intention was to get Libya’s oil and to maybe establish bases of operation in that country. Their whole intention is to have a foothold for NATO on the African continent. We know this now because the U.S. government along with France and Great Britain now officially recognize the Libyan rebel council in Benghazi.
Consider this—since NATO started its bombing campaign against Gaddhafi over 1,200 Libyan civilians have been killed by NATO bombs. So much for pretending to try and “protect civilians.” Also consider the fact that the whole operation was to not let Gaddhafi’s airforce from flying and attacking civilians. To my knowledge, tanks and military personnel careers cannot fly. But these were the very things Great Britain, France and the United States attacked on the ground since only Gaddhafi’s forces had them at the time.
There is no question that this war has become a personal commitment by U.S. President Barack Obama. Obama has definitely exceeded his authority under the U.S. Constitution, but the U.S. Congress will not touch him on this issue. And so the U.S. war in Libya continues, although the war is beginning to look like a stalemate. From the very beginning the U.S. government was ready for a war against Gaddhafi, and from the very beginning the U.S. government will continue a war of attrition until Gaddhafi is gone.
And it is the U.S. taxpayer who will be footing the bill. The whole operation was never a “no fly zone” plan to protect civilians. This country is in a legitimate (or as I would call it an illegitimate) war where we are spending tens of millions of dollars at a time when programs for the poor and needy as well as seniors will be cut or greatly curtailed. The politicians are saying that Americans cannot get the Social Security checks or the Medicare they have paid into, but the politicians can find money to fight a war halfway around the world that really is none of our business!
The Libyan civil war is Obama’s personal war, and it is costing the U.S. taxpayer a bundle. If the crook (Obama) had told us it was going to be a long drawn-out war he would have been more honest. But in trying to avoid the term “war” truth is the first casualty. Whatever it is being called, we the people of the United States are paying for it. It’s hard to call the action a “no fly zone” now.
