Youth at Little Village Boys and Girls Club, 2801 S. Ridgeway, spent Tuesday morning joking and playing around with White Sox pitcher Sergio Santos. “This is a great opportunity for me to come out here and talk with youth about the importance of working hard and staying connected to their roots,” said Sergio Santos.
Santos, who developed the “Sergio’s Stars” program this year, is dedicated to reaching out to Latino youth across the city. Through “Sergio’s Stars,” Santos hosts groups at U.S. Cellular Field, meets with youth during batting practice, provides game tickets, and visits several community centers throughout the season. “I just love being able to communicate with these kids and motivate them to work hard.” Santos, who is of Mexican descent, knows first hand the value of working hard from watching his parents. “My parents worked long hours to be able to provide us with a great living. They created a great environment that pushed us to reach our potential and that is what the Little Village Boys and Girls Club does for the young individuals of this community. It helps them reach their potential and gives them a safe environment where they can just be kids and and learn,” said Santos. In between playing ping pong and pool, Santos spoke with students and handed out White Sox souvenirs.
