The Real Obama Scandal
By Daniel Nardini
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) had in 2009 launched an operation that was not only ill-conceived but in the end provided more than enough weaponry that murdered many innocent people. The operation, dubbed “Fast and Furious,” gave the Mexican drug cartels 2,000 firearms ranging from pistols to small arms and even semi-automatic weapons. The point of the operation was to trace where the firearms went so that the ATF could track and eventually bust the Mexican drug cartels’ gun smuggling networks. Not only did this not work, but the drug cartels got top-of-the-line weapons to kill innocent people with. And the drug cartels killed a lot of people. It is estimated that the drug cartels killed 150 people, but the estimate may be in the hundreds. One of these weapons, a semi-automatic AK-47, was found at the murder scene of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. The drug cartels used one of the weapons they had obtained from Fast and Furious to kill a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
The U.S. House of Representatives, in a vote of 255 in favor to 67 against, have found U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for withholding records pertinent to the investigation of this ill-conceived operation. Even if the U.S. House of Representatives issue arrest warrants for Eric Holder over this operation, the chances are the U.S. Justice Department will simply ignore them (as of this time it has). This speaks volumes about an operation that was not only illegal and ill-thought out, but has led to the death of one U.S. citizen and who-knows how many Mexican nationals in Mexico. This is a real scandal that has not gotten enough attention. How can U.S. President Barack Obama express having confidence in a person who has essentially undermined the U.S. Constitution itself? How can anyone have any confidence in a president who will not even investigate one of his own inner cabinet members? Think of what it means for the families who lost loved ones because the U.S. government armed those criminal cartels! Think of all the innocent blood that has been spilled by an operation that was bound to go wrong from the start!
This is a major scandal—an operation that caused the needless deaths of nationals in two countries. Why isn’t Eric Holder on trial for crimes against two nations? Because President Obama will not touch him. Obama is guilty of having started a war in Libya without a declaration of war from the U.S. Congress. So it is not hard for Obama to ignore any arrest warrants from any part of the Congress against a member of his inner circle. But what happened should go beyond party lines. This was a serious crime by a list of people who did more to help the drug cartels than harm them. For those innocent people who were murdered, more needs to be done to make sure that those families who lost loved ones are reassured that justice will be done and that anything like this does not happen again.
