The Bolivian Loose Cannon
By: Daniel Nardini
The United States and the American people have more to deal with than just Hugo Chavez. On September 26th, at the United Nations, Bolivian President Evo Morales called the United States the “greatest terrorist.” He was referring to the United States still having Cuba on the U.S. government’s list of countries that sponsor terrorism. While I might agree that it is questionable whether Cuba should be on that list, I am not too thrilled about Morales declaring the United States as a terrorist nation or a nation sponsoring terrorism. I take exception to that. While I may have objected to the U.S. government helping the Libyan rebels overthrow Muamar Gaddhafi, that is a far cry from aiding and abetting groups that blow up airplanes, attack and kill civilians in their homes or in public places, and in giving on purpose money and weapons to groups that smuggle illicit drugs and kill innocent people (I personally think that Operation Fast and Furious, whereby the U.S. government supplied Mexican cartels with weapons, was more stupidity than anything else).
But for Morales, America and Americans are obviously the “greatest evil” in the world. By coming out not only for the Cuban government and Hugo Chavez but by calling the United States “the greatest evil on earth” shows his true colors. It shows he is a Communist, an authoritarian leader, and a hypocrite. He did not endear himself to the Chilean representative at the United Nations when he called for Chile to “return” the land that Bolivia once had that gave Bolivia a coastline to the Pacific Ocean. Bolivia lost this coastal area to Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883), and it seems that Morales is intent on trying to regain this territory by peaceful or belligerent means. Then there is the legalization of the coca plant that is used in the manufacture of cocaine. Morales has simply allowed this to go on in Bolivia, and this has resulted in increased production of cocaine and increased shipments of cocaine to the United States. Morales has no intention of helping Bolivian farmers find an alternative to planting and growing cocaine.
Besides all of this, Morales is working with rogue states such a Iran and even Syria, and he is in an alliance with leftist regimes such as Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Any way you look at it, Evo Morales is no friend of the United States.
