Assessor Berrios Announces Appeal Period is Open for Cicero Township Taxpayers

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - BusinessCook County Assessor Joseph Berrios announced that Cicero Township taxpayers may appeal their assessments until April 15th.

Each year, the Cook County Assessor’s Office reassesses one-third of the nearly 1.8 million parcels of property located in Cook County. South suburban Cicero Township will not be reassessed again until next year in 2014. Non reassessed properties receive assessment notices only when there are changes in an assessment during non reassessment years. This may be due to a situation such as a vacancy, occupancy or when a new home is placed on the tax rolls. Taxpayers do have a right to appeal their assessments every year though, even when their properties are not being reassessed.

Any proposed changes in assessments this year will be reflected on second-installment tax bills, which will be due in the summer of 2014. The time for Cicero township taxpayers to file an appeal is now, however, when their township is currently open for appeals.

A single-family homeowner may compare his or her assessment with those of similar homes. Assessor Berrios’ Web site allows taxpayers to search for information using a 14-digit Property Index Number (PIN) or by typing in an address. Homeowners can check their property’s characteristics, as well as search for information on similar properties to use if they choose to appeal their assessments.

Residential taxpayers may also file an appeal online and the Assessor’s Web site allows them to search for comparables and add those comparables to their online appeals. The Assessor’s Web site is located at (www.cookcountyassessor.com).
