Chicago Area Project (CAP) and CAP Affiliate, South Shore Drill Team (SSDT), partnered with The World Harmony Run to sponsor a Peace Tree Planting and March on Monday across the North and South sides of Chicago. With inner-city violence at its summer peak, the initiative focused on spreading ideas of hope and peace in impacted communities.
The South Shore Drill Team, an organization that includes over 300 inner-city youth that focuses on the performing arts, performed immediately following the planting. CAP and SSDT youth then offered personal testimonials about the impact of violence in their communities and the importance of the programs provided. The tree was planted at the GCWY Farm and the youth picked the Oriental Japanese Red Maple, referred to as the Sri Chinomy Peace Tree, as their symbol for peace.
The Peace Initiative continued in the Roscoe Village neighborhood, where SSDT members joined World Harmony runners for a March dedicated to spreading peace throughout Chicago.
