The National Alliance for Hispanic Health announced the results of a survey which revealed Hispanic adults’ understanding of and attitudes toward diabetes. Conducted with support from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (BIPI) and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY), the results show that the surveyed Hispanic adults are aware of and worried about diabetes, but there is a need for better education. Among the survey findings:
- Hispanic adults surveyed have a general awareness of diabetes and more than half of the respondents know someone with diabetes, mostly family members. However, Hispanic respondents with diabetes were more likely to report being worried that a family member will develop diabetes (68 percent) than other survey respondents (52 and 53 percent for non-Hispanic whites and non-Hispanic blacks with diabetes, respectively).
- Although almost all Hispanic respondents with diabetes reported a person with diabetes can take actions to control their disease (98 percent), some key disease management practices were identified by less than half of those surveyed.
- Hispanic respondents also were less likely to believe you could live a healthy life with diabetes (86 percent of those with diabetes vs. 96 percent of non-Hispanic whites with diabetes).
