Morton College has achieved one of the top spots as a safe college campus in the United States in a new study released this fall. According to HomeInsurance.com, a consumer-centric insurance marketplace, Morton College has been tapped as the Fourth-Safest College Campus in the country, beating out nearly 400 other campuses. Pennsylvania State University – Harrisburg, University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and Bristol Community College in Massachusetts were the top three schools, respectively.

To come up with the safety numbers, analysts used the FBI reports on violent and property crime for colleges, universities and community colleges throughout the United States. They also factored in the walkability of the communities hosting the colleges and examined the two scores together to determine safety standards. Morton College, the second-oldest community college in Illinois, has no instances of violent crime in 2013, the latest year available for HomeInsurance.com.

“Morton College ranked 4th on the list due to having zero violent crime incidents and minimal property crime incidents,” said the statement by HomeInsurance.com. “Cicero, Illinois, where Morton College is located, also had a high walk score.” Tony Martinucci, Morton College Board President, praised HomeInsurance.com for their rankings, saying the ranking reinforces what many on campus already believed.

“We take great pride in providing excellent education for our students but it is also important that they feel safe when they come here to learn,” Martinucci said. “Our campus safety team is definitely one of the best in the nation and this is proof of that.”
