During Dia de los Muertos weekend, a group of vexed Logan Square parents built Day of the Dead altars to urge legislators to fix the state budget. “Altars are built to honor ancestors and grieve a loss one,” Erika Soto, a mother of two, explained. “Well, by building these alters we are saying we want justice and solutions and fair taxes, not more cuts to education. Soto is a member of the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA). The altars included a “tree of life,” representing fair solutions to bring more money to pass a state budget by “increasing taxes on the wealthy, corporations, and financial institutions.”
