Mercy Hospital & Medical Center is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Davenport has been selected as the new Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Davenport replaces Dr. Michael McDonnell who served as CMO from April 2013 to January 2016 and is returning to private practice at Mercy. Dr. Davenport assumed his role on January 4, 2016. In his role Dr. Davenport will help lead the overall clinical strategic vision for the hospital and have responsibility for the following departments including: Medical Staff-Department of Chairs; Hospitalists; Chief Medical Information Officer; Medical Education; Quality and Patient Safety; Research and IRB; Medical Library and Risk Management. “We are pleased to welcome Dr. Davenport to the team and are certain that his clinical expertise and leadership experience will help further and support Mercy’s overall strategic vision for best practice medicine and the highest quality patient care,” says Carol Schneider, President and CEO.
Dr. Davenport joins Mercy from The Methodist Hospitals, a two-hospital system in Gary and Merrillville, Indiana, where he served as Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer. During his time at The Methodist Hospitals, he was responsible for quality and patient safety; risk management; regulatory compliance; infection control; medical staff services; medical education; physician development and recruitment; the employed physicians group; the hospitalist program; case management physician advisors; surgical services; anesthesiology, and the medical directors. He also had the opportunity to serve as President and Interim CEO for fifteen months. Dr. Davenport is a native Chicagoan. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University, and his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, followed by his residency at Cook County. He is also trained in Lean Healthcare from the University of Michigan and is a Certified Patient Safety Educator.
