Inspired by Studs Terkel’s 1974 book Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do, the exhibit features powerful photos and raw, honest text that captures the working experiences of 24 people from around the country, including a veteran-turned-urban farmer, a retired oil field worker, a high school principal, a Lyft driver and a professional escort, among others. Beginning September 14, the exhibit will be on display at Harold Washington Library Center, 3rd Floor North, 400 S. State Street. On opening day of the Working in America exhibit, author and journalist Alex Kotlowitz will moderate a panel at 6p.m. at the Harold Washington Library Center. October will bring a series of “Working Lunches” every Thursday to the library where speakers will discuss their working lives. Members of the public will be able to upload their own stories and photographs to an online archive called “Your Working Story.” For more information, please call (312) 747-4050 or visit chipublib.org.
