The U.S. Department of Education awarded National Louis University (NLU) a $1.18 million TRIO Education Opportunity Centers (EOC) Grant to provide college readiness support for adults ages 18 and older. The EOC grant, five years in duration, will assist minority students and veterans in gaining the skills necessary for pursuing postsecondary credentials. Specifically, the program will offer counseling and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter or continue a program of postsecondary education, as well as improve the financial literacy of participants. As part of the EOC grant, NLU will guide potential college students through the enrollment process from earning their GED to completing college applications and preparing for college entrance exams. Resources include tutoring and mentoring, along with information on federal financial aid programs and public/private scholarships, and personal and career counseling. The goals of the project are to increase the access to support services in the target areas, so the participants and their families increase their knowledge and skills for successful transitions to and completion of postsecondary education. NLU will coordinate extensively with program partners that are community-based organizations with deep commitment to and knowledge of the target areas. National Louis University’s Education Opportunity Center program will be housed at La Casa in Chicago’s Pilsen Neighborhood. The university also has partnered with El Valor, Enlace Chicago and the Pilsen Neighborhood Community Council to share public information campaigns about college admissions, academic advice and course selection, assistance completing IHE admission/FAFSA applications, and career workshops.
