According to The American Association, only one in three Hispanic women are aware that heart disease us their number one killer. Adding that many Hispanic women have stated that they are more likely to take preventative action for their families when it comes to heart health. However, end up overlooking their own health in the process. In an effort to educate Hispanic women about the importance of maintaining a healthy heart, The American Heart Association’s Go Red Por Tu Corazón held a Mother’s Day Celebration at the Bridgeport Art Center on Sunday, May 7th where nearly 500 people gathered to celebrate women and learn about heart health. The event was emceed by Sandra Navarro, American Heart Association Ambassador and Assistant Editor at Radio Claret América. The event was free and filled with fun family activities. Guests visited vendor booths from a range of organizations, such as Esperanza Health Centers, Illinois Heart Rescue, Sinai Health System, and Chicago Hispanic Health Coalition to name a few.
Attendees also learned Hands-Only CPR, which was taught by Illinois Heart Rescue and was entertained by the Mariachi Heritage Foundation and Ballet Folklórico de Casa Maravilla Senior Center. Community residents were also recognized with the Go Red Por Tu Corazón Inspiration Award for their efforts to make positive changes to improve the quality of life and health for themselves or community. Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle was also one of the recipients of the award and addressed the guests with remarks. Go Red Por Tu Corazón Mother’s Day Celebration provided actionable steps to help reduce cardiovascular disease within the Latino community in Chicago and guests walked away with education and resources.
