On Monday, Google hosted a kick-off event for Computer Science Education Week at South Shore Cultural Center Park with CPS students and teachers. At the kick-off event, Chance the Rapper announced (via a pre-recorded message) that a video game coded by Chicago Public School students is the official video game for his song “I Love You So Much” with DJ Khaled. “I’m so proud of Chicago Public School students – for their creativity, their work in learning to code, and the community that made this happen,” cheered Chance the Rapper. “For this year’s Computer Science Education Week, I’m excited to announce that ‘SuperMe’ is the official video game for I Love You So Much. Go check it out!”
This is the first time a platinum recording artist has made an online coding game in place of the official music video. Starting today, “Code Your Hero,” a new activity modeled after the CPS students’ game, “SuperMe,” will also be made available to any student and teacher in English and Spanish. “Code Your Hero” is part of CS First, a free program that increases student access and exposure to computer science (CS) education through after-school, in-school, and summer programs. The program gives teachers, students, and parents the tools they need to grow and nurture a child’s interest in coding and engineering. “Google has been a longtime partner with Chicago Public Schools and this year’s CS Education Week is no different. Increasing students’ access to STEM education is critical to ensuring their success in the digital economy of the future,” said Karen Sauder, Vice President and Google Chicago Site Lead.
