The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago announced that it is converting some of its local Ys into emergency shelters to house hundreds of displaced and homeless individuals currently in shelters where they are unable to practice social distancing. At a press conference with Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Y leaders shared details of its partnership with the City to offer relief to Chicago’s shelters. Facilitated by the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) and in partnership with the City and other community-based organizations, the Y is proud to step up to provide needed shelter in YMCA locations across the city. The City and its human service partners will manage and staff the shelter, and provide food, bedding, and hygiene kits. The Y is providing facility management, telecommunications, utilities, and container storage space in its parking lot. The Y came forward to assist the City on the frontlines of the crisis despite the financial strain it will have on its own organization. The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago asks the good citizens of this great city to please stand with us in our mission and donate, if able, at ymcachicago.org/covidrelief.
