CAMP Schwab, an annual program that offers fun athletic and cultural activities for children with disabilities from across the West and South sides of Chicago, went “up top” this summer. Kids participated in three days of arts, games, music, food and other activities in the Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital rooftop garden, as well as in Douglass Park this week. Local hip hop recording artist Ric Wilson made a special appearance on August 5th. For many of the kids, given the impact of COVID-19 on outdoor events and activities, this was their first time getting out of the house for several months. Rooftop activities included slime-making, scavenger hunts, giant Jenga games, art classes with One River from the Art Institute of Chicago, and food and music with a local DJ. This is the 15th year for CAMP Schwab, which is hosted by Sinai and its longtime partner, KT’s Kids. KT’s Kids was started in 2003 to raise money for the children of the KidsRehab at Schwab program. The program serves kids from infants to teenagers, many of whom are low income or have been violently injured. The Schwab team includes physical, occupational, speech and psychological therapists who work with these kids to help them gain back their best functional independence after illness or injury with treatment plans tailored to the needs of each child.
