The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is warning of a potential terror attack somewhere in the United States,and by a group that can and may target innocent people. No, I am not talking about Al Qaeda. The threat is said to come from a “domestic terror” group(s). I am not saying there is no danger, but I am asking myself, “haven’t we seen this before?” This answer is most certainly affirmative; back in the 2000’s. But back then it was an external threat and the attacks on September 11, 2001, were real enough. The attack of the Capital Building on January 6, 2021 was just as real, and there is no doubt there is an extreme right wing insurgency movement underway.
But here is the danger; Democrat politicians and left-leaning security officials could be just as equally seeing wild neo-nazis under their beds. As a result they could pass questionable and unconstitutional laws that could just as easily hit at innocent people who have nothing to do with extreme right wing causes or groups. This happened in the 2000’s when people could and were put in prison on the mere suspicion of being connected to Al Qaeda. Are we going to see this again? Are we going to see signs and posters that tell people to “watch out or report any suspicious right wing activity”? What the Democrat (and yes, the federal government is now mostly made up of Democrats at this stage) politicians should remember is that there are already laws on the books that punish criminal and terrorist activities. We do not need any extra laws specifically created to deal with right wing domestic groups or activities.
It must be kept in mind that our justice system still goes on the principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty, and creating laws that will contradict this can only defeat the purpose of stopping right wing activities and turn innocent people against the government. Are we going to go back to the days when the government issues hysterical warnings and coded emergencies about eminent attacks against the country? Are we going back to the days when we have black jails, use of torture, and the trampling of people’s rights to protect the country? Are we going to the point where we suspend habeas corpus, and have rendition of suspects to places where they are imprisoned indefinitely with no rights, no protections and no possibility of proving themselves innocent? The extreme rightists are saying that the government has already become a “Communist entity,” and if the Democrats enact the unconstitutional polices and laws that some are calling for, then for the right wing extremists and the rest of us it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
