A new law spearheaded by state Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, will assist immigrants who are survivors of human trafficking. “We must support survivors of human trafficking, regardless of their immigration status,” said Hernandez. “Survivors have faced life-altering and horrible conditions that no one should have to experience. Ensuring they receive a helping hand with basic needs like medical, food, and financial assistance is crucial to the recovery of their health and safety.” Hernandez’s Senate Bill 506 extends the Cash and Food Assistance for Non-Citizen Victims of Trafficking, Torture, or Other Serious Crimes program. The program provides access to Medicaid, food supplies, and financial assistance, but was meant to expire by the start of 2022. Due to the efforts of Hernandez and stakeholders, these services have been extended permanently to bring significantly needed relief to survivors.
