The Flu Returns!
By Daniel Nardini
It seems we have forgotten that age-old virus which is now making a comeback amid the corona virus pandemic. That age-old virus is the FLU. As the Omicron variant of the corona virus seems to be a LOT less debilitating and deadly than first thought, the old scourge of humanity has returned! The flu can be deadly to vulnerable people with weak immune systems, it can be dangerous to old people and to very young children. It has been known to kill thousands of people every year (28,000 in the United States and 650,000 worldwide in 2019). In certain parts of the United States, flu cases are rising this year, and who knows how many hospitalizations there will be.
So what are we to do? First, we should encourage people in vulnerable categories such as the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, and young children to get vaccinated. I said encouraged, not forced. Second, we should prepare areas in hospitals for those who do come down with severe symptoms of the flu. Third, we should all take the normal precautions of wearing especially warm clothing when we go outside when the weather is especially cold, wet and rainy or snowy. This is all common sense to avoid coming down with the flu.
What we should not be doing is mandating everyone to get a flu shot, force all private businesses with 100 or more employees to get vaccinated, and threatening anyone and everyone with fines and jail if they to not get a flu vaccine. We should not order people to wear masks inside locations, have vaccine passports, and threaten private businesses which do not comply with fines and the threat of shutting them down. We should not have lock-downs, and not drive family-owned restaurants, bars and stores out of business for not complying with mandated policies. We should use common sense, and this will save lives. Now let us watch how the politicians will get this all wrong!
