Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) announced last Wednesday, the winning submissions for the 6th bp Student Ideas Competition, along with lead sponsor for the competition bp America. The Fall 2021 prompt asked young people to design a new collective space for one of three purposes: exchanges / exchanging; plants / planting; commons / commoning. One hundred thirty-three students representing 28 schools and 30 zip codes across Chicagoland submitted to the Fall 2021 competition. Project submissions included a botanical-themed green public library that brings the outdoors inside; a miniature golf course in Pilsen where players can have fun while learning about the history of Chicago; and a technology learning center for Pullman residents. The bp Student Ideas Competition encourages middle and high school students to explore how design can play a role in creating shared spaces and improving communities. Since 2015, CAB competitions have engaged more than 2,000 students from over 80 schools representing 73 unique zip codes. These competitions invite students to think critically about and address architecture and the built environment from a wide range of disciplines, including design, the humanities, visual and performing arts, and STEM fields.
