Triton College in River Grove offers ophthalmic technology, a growing, in-demand field, on its campus. An information session will be held on Monday, June 6, 3 p.m., in the H Building (Room H-129). The program is offered to those interested in this career path. Lisa Maas, the Ophthalmic Technician Program chair, explained that Triton College is the only accredited program for the technical level with an associate degree in Illinois. She explained that an ophthalmic technician is a health career professional that works alongside an ophthalmologist (an eye doctor/surgeon), who specializes in eye disease and pathology.
“The ophthalmic technician gathers patient information and history, and performs the initial eye exam and any required diagnostic tests that will assist the physician with a diagnosis and treatment plan,” she said. “Technicians provide explanation to the patients regarding their diagnosis and recommended treatment, and can assist in surgery.” Maas said there are no prerequisite courses for the 60-credit-hour program. The program can be completed in five semesters, which is just under two years. She explained that since this is an Associate in Applied Science degree program, there are general education and allied health courses that must be taken in addition to the ophthalmic courses.
