The Illinois Coalition for Independent Work (ICIW) is welcoming six new community, advocacy, and racial equity organizations to further the coalition’s mission of supporting flexibility and independence for app-based drivers in Illinois. The newest ICIW members are the Bronzeville Chamber of Commerce, Economic Strategies Development Corporation (ESDC), Metropolitan Family Services, Northwest Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Southland Black Chamber of Commerce, South Shore Chamber of Commerce, and Kids off the Block. These organizations join an already diverse group of coalition partners, including social justice, technology, and business leaders throughout Illinois.
App-based work emerged as a growing source of additional income amid the pandemic, giving workers the ability to earn extra money while tending to other responsibilities. According to a recent study from the Illinois Coalition for Independent Work, average hourly earnings for drivers in Chicago, including tips, is $36.63 per hour they’re providing a ride or delivery. Even without tips, drivers in Chicago are earning an average of $32.35 per hour they’re providing a ride or delivery. The $36.63 hourly wage greatly exceeds the minimum wage in Illinois and the city of Chicago, making app-based work a viable option for many who seek to have flexibility in their work schedules while supplementing their income. The Illinois Coalition for Independent Work will work with new and current members in the months ahead to continue to advocate for app-based workers while elevating their important stories.
