North Lawndale celebrated the grand opening of Sheila’s @ Douglass 18, a concession stand located at the Douglass 18 Mini Golf Course, marking a significant milestone in community development and youth empowerment for the neighborhood. The full-service concession stand seeks to serve as a food vendor and as an educational platform for local and aspiring young entrepreneurs, offering practical experience in business and the hospitality industry. The event was community-focused, with residents and partners celebrating together while enjoying food, refreshments, and games. Sheila’s @ Douglass 18 is operated by Sheila McNary, a North Lawndale resident and Chair of the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council Arts & Culture Committee. As the lead trainer, McNary will guide local vendors and interns from West Side High Schools through hands-on training. These interns will also connect with various community-based organizations and philanthropic partners. Operating from late June to early Fall, Sheila’s @ Douglass 18 is a key part of the award-winning North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council’s Quality-of-Life Plan, enhancing community well-being and prosperity. Funded by the Mars Wrigley Foundation’s Community Connection Grant in collaboration with LISC, Sheila’s @ Douglass 18 will generate income to support the upkeep and programming of the Douglass 18 Mini Golf Course, boosting this community asset, aiding the Chicago Park District, and promoting community ownership and economic development.
