Deadline Approaches for New Grocery Benefit

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Education

School started Monday for kids across Chicago, but their parents still have a chance to sign up for a new summer benefit that provides $120 per child to purchase groceries. The deadline to enroll for 2024 Summer EBT benefits is August 31. Children who rely on school breakfast and lunch lose this important source of nutrition during the summer months, creating hardship for families struggling to make ends meet. After providing extra food for their kids all summer, parents still have a week to sign up for this grocery benefit. Otherwise, they leave money on the table. The Greater Chicago Food Depository is leading a statewide awareness campaign to make sure families know about this new federal program – and the fast-approaching deadline to enroll. More than one million Illinois children are eligible for this benefit, and we don’t want any of their families to miss out. For more information, visit www.chicagofoodbank.org
