Promoting Cultural Awareness with By The Hand Club For Kids

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - EducationSweltering heat could not deter the students at By The Hand Club for Kids who walked along the 26th Street Corridor to take in all the historical sites, food, music, and the cultural significance of Little Village. By The Hand Club for Kids is a non-profit organization “Christ-centered” after-school program that helps children who live in under-resources neighborhoods. This summer, high school students spent six weeks visiting neighborhoods, such as Chinatown, Humboldt Park, Little Village, Little Saigon as part of cultural awareness and sensitivity program while gaining hands-on instruction in documentary filmmaking. The organization’s goal is to instill in Chicago youth an appreciation of the city’s diversity and to build the courage to step outside of their comfort zone. The project was conceived by the leaders of NXT, By The Hand Club’s high school program designed to help students explore “what’s next” as they transition to college or career. On Tuesday, students had the opportunity to explore some of Little Village’s gem, such as Los Comales, La Jalicience, the Little Village Welcome Arch, and DulceLandia Candy Store.
