An Open Letter About the U.S. Constitution

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryAbove all else, I believe and follow the U.S. Constitution where I have freedom of speech, and freedom of the press. What I have done, and will continue to do, is write my commentaries no matter who is in power. It does not matter that the Republican Party, the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, or any of his picks have ultimate power to change the course of this country or its laws, my part of what I say and what I report will not change. If the news is bad or critical of the Trump administration, then so be it. If I am critical of what Trump and the Republicans have done and are doing, then this is necessary. The very first amendment of the U.S. Constitution ensures that there is a free press. I have been and will continue to be an equal opportunity critic of whatever and whoever as guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution—the law of the land.

And this is exactly what the U.S. Constitution is; the law of the land. And no matter what the current U.S. Supreme Court has said what extra-ordinary powers a sitting president may have, this does NOT entitle this person to arrest, jail and execute innocent news reporters or commentators for their reporting the news or offering an opinion however unfavorable or unflattering it may be to Trump or the Republican Party of any powerful person it may offend. I have equally offended a WHOLE LIST of people in the past. Be they in the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, the Communist Party, etc. And this will NOT change. So, to the incoming Republican Party trifecta; get used to it!

Personally, I am not always thrilled about saying bad stuff, or being the messenger bringing the bad news. But this is what the news is, and it is a bulwark of what press freedom is all about. This has been the case in the past, and it will be the case in the future no matter who is in charge. If Trump wishes to censor me, imprisonment me or sue me for doing my job then he should know that this will not stop me from what I am doing and what I must do. I will not be intimidated by a person who wants to be like Hungary’s current dictator Viktor Orban. I have served as part of the first line of defense of the U.S. Constitution, and I will continue to do so.
