Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) announced a historic milestone for O’Hare and Midway International Airports, with summer 2025 poised to be the busiest season in their history. This summer, Chicago’s airports will be busier than ever, with airlines scheduling nearly 17.8 million departing seats from June through August — representing a 7 percent increase over last year and a 4 percent increase over 2019. O’Hare and Midway will connect travelers to approximately 265 destinations worldwide, up from 250 last summer, further strengthening Chicago’s role as a global aviation hub. American Airlines and United Airlines, the largest hub carriers at O’Hare, have both announced significant expansion plans. In February, American Airlines announced it has scheduled 25 percent more seats and 22 percent more departures from O’Hare this summer compared to summer 2024, with an anticipated peak of 480 flights per day. The carrier also announced that beginning in June, all service from O’Hare will be provided on larger, dual-class aircraft to provide more travelers with the opportunity to fly in premium seats. United Airlines, O’Hare’s largest carrier, announced in February that it will operate more seats out of Chicago in 2025 than at any point in the past two decades. To support this growth, the airline hired nearly 2,000 employees in Illinois in 2024, reinforcing its commitment to expansion in the region.
