Leaving Our Asian Allies Vulnerable

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryAs if the whole scandal of U.S. President Donald Trump’s Secretary for the Department of Defense Pete Hegseth’s use of a commercial private chat known as Signal (twice in a row) is not bad enough (illegal and horrendous to put it mildly), it is now becoming obvious that America’s closest allies are questioning the whole of America’s military and intelligence network. The fact that Hegseth could use and did use a VERY not secure non-government chat group throwing out timetables, military operations, and troop movements for military operations against America’s enemies means that Hegseth has compromised the whole of Pentagon operations and the U.S. military in general.

Hegseth, through his incompetence and leaking of war plans, has caused a complete meltdown at the Pentagon that will take years to repair. The worst part of this all is that Trump will not get rid of Hegseth. Trump values loyalty to him more than competence and experience—-of which Trump’s administration has none. What this all means for America’s allies and friends is that America’s intelligence network is being denigrated to the point where not only America’s friends and allies but America’s enemies know what the United States is doing. So what is the point of America’s intelligence worth if it is so badly leaked to friend and foe alike?

The countries that shall be affected most will be America’s allies that need America’s military protection from their enemies. These countries I speak of are Israel, Japan, South Korea and yes even Taiwan. Japan, South Korea and Taiwan now fear that any American military intelligence information they get has already been compromised to their enemies China and North Korea. This is a disaster of the highest magnitude. Why would these countries trust America when its very military intelligence network is totally not secured? And Americans will have to think what it means for the United States as a whole.

If we do not protect Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, then the U.S. territories of Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa will be vulnerable to possible Chinese/or North Korean attack. Equally bad will be the State of Hawaii being threatened as well. We have to keep in mind that Chinese and North Korean naval vessels are moving all over the Pacific, and any leaked American intelligence information would greatly help them. We are talking about the territorial integrity of the United States being vulnerable and compromised. If our allies and friends in the Far East go then so will these territories and Hawaii. Think of the hundreds of thousands of American military personnel and their families who may be in grave danger because of what Hegseth has done and might do!

One of the reasons why the Far East and especially former U.S. President Barack Obama’s pivot towards this region of the world has been and is still remains of vital importance is to protect American soil itself. Hence, undermining America’s allies is truly undermining America itself. For well over a century the United States has been not only a major power in the America’s but also a major Pacific power. If powerful people at the top of the U.S. government undermine America’s security then we undermine the security of America’s Asian allies and friends as well as (heaven forbid) endanger hundreds of thousands of innocent American lives.
