The Agony of Afghanistan
By Daniel Nardini
The United Nations has called upon the Taliban government in Afghanistan to respect the rights of women and to restore women’s right for health care, education and being able to go to public places. At present, the Taliban no longer allow women to go to public parks, public baths, banning them from secondary and higher education, and forcing women to wear the traditional head covering that completely hides their faces and bodies. Also, women are not allowed to go out of the home without a family male companion. In every and all respects, the Taliban has broken their word to “respect” women’s rights.
But then the Taliban’s intentions was never to respect the rights of women or anyone who opposed their rule. The countries that have objected the most to the Taliban are Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, France, Gabon, Japan, Malta, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. You know the Taliban is extreme when a fellow Muslim country is protesting what they are doing. To add to the mess, the Islamic State group carried out a suicide attack on a ministry information office, killing five people. The Islamic State wants an even more extreme Islamic state compared to what the Taliban has created. Whatever peace the Taliban has brought to the country is coming at a very high price. The United Nations estimates that 90 percent of the Afghan population is “food insecure.” This is another way of saying most of the people may be on the edge of starvation.
The Taliban should not expect any help from the western countries. No western country recognizes the Taliban government. This is no surprise because the Taliban has not kept its word for what it promised in the peace agreement between the Taliban and the U.S. government. One other thing that is disturbing is that both China and Russia are keeping a diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. It seems that authoritarian governments have no problem in dealing with the Taliban. It seems that Afghanistan under the Taliban, along with Iran and other authoritarian states, are forming alliances with rogue superpowers like China and Russia. I see a very disturbing pattern here. It seems that Afghanistan has become part of the larger conflict between the liberal democracies and an axis of authoritarian states. Meanwhile, the people of Afghanistan are still suffering under their government.
