With Hispanic Heritage Month starting on September 15, the Illinois Office of Tourism is encouraging Illinoisans to get out and explore Illinois’ rich and diverse Hispanic heritage. From learning about historic and contemporary contributions to attending events and visiting cultural institutions to supporting Hispanic-owned businesses, there are dozens of ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Illinois.
• The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood is one of the largest Latino cultural institutions in the country. On September 20th, they’ll be opening their popular Día De Muertos exhibit. This year’s exhibit is dedicated to Ray Patlán, a Chicago muralist and painter who passed away earlier this year.
• The Mexican Cultural Center DuPage in Oak Brook encourages and promotes Mexican heritage through cultural, ethnic and civic activities designed to educate the city of West Chicago’s Mexican community and the community at large. Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, visitors can visit their newest project – Olmec Trails: Culture and Legacy, an outdoor exhibit featuring work from 33 artists that recreates ancient Mexican culture throughout DuPage County.
• Casa de Arte in Peoria is an intriguing blend of lounge, art gallery and Mexican restaurant. You can sip on tequila and eat tacos while viewing some impressive pieces of Mexican art. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of one of the artists working on a piece while you’re there.
