Protests Against Trump Growing

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryI talked to an old lady who lives in Sterling, Illinois, which is 115 miles away from Chicago. She told me that there was a large protest in downtown Sterling by many people against current President Donald Trump’s administration. She was surprised that such a protest happened as normally most people in that small industrial city had little interest in politics. She told me that when she drove through downtown Sterling she saw many protesters near the post office marching down the street. Sterling is the manufacturing center of Wahl products. Every time I visited a CVS pharmacy I would see clippers made by the Wahl Corporation in Sterling. The fact that protests are happening in far away Sterling is telling me that anger against Trump and the Republicans is happening well beyond the major metropolitan areas.

I never imagined that grassroots protests would be taking place in small cities and towns normally not interested in doing such things. But as inflation increases and political uncertainty is getting worse by the day, protests are not only breaking out in blue (Democrat) states but also red (Republican) states as the new congressional budget being passed by the bare majority Republican-controlled U.S. Congress becomes known to the public. This is all building for a perfect storm that even normally loyal Republican voters are concerned and angry about. U.S. senators and House of Representatives are getting more than an earful from Republican voters at town hall meetings who most likely might just get questions but little else before. This is not surprising considering there are cuts being made to veterans’ benefits, Medicaid, and Meals on Wheels.

More than that, the Democrats and Republicans against President Trump (those few that are left) feel they have a chance to get rid of those Republicans who are for Trump and his MAGA (Make America Great Again) cult. One other thing that I have noticed is that progressive (i.e. left) groups are growing throughout the United States because there are a growing number of people are becoming disillusioned with Trump fast. One organization that is growing is the Democratic Socialists of America. There is no doubt that this organization is involved in many of the protests, demonstrations and growing opposition against Trump and the MAGA crowd including in small places like Sterling. As Trump’s behavior becomes ever more bizarre and his policies harm more people in both blue and red states, the protests and verbal attacks against Trump and the congressional Republicans will only get worse. My fear all of this will lead to not only pure anger but violence.
