On Tuesday, State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) passed House Bill 3365 that prohibits people convicted of domestic battery from owning guns and restricts anyone, who under restraining order, from possessing a firearm. “This is common sense legislation that will prevent convicted domestic abusers from committing of heinous crimes,” Martinez said. “As a member of the General Assembly, I believe it is our responsibility to ensure Illinoisans live in safe environments.” HB 3365 also expands the list of crimes to determine ineligibility to own a firearm to include individuals convicted of domestic violence. The measure would also expand the “look back” period in the FOID Act to include domestic battery. The “look back” provision reviews all convictions in the past five years to assess eligibility for a FOID card. “This legislation will save lives,” Martinez said. “By denying people access to firearms, we will protect domestic violence victims.” HB 3365 now goes to the Governor for further consideration.
