A Shotgun Coming to a City Near You
By: Daniel Nardini
A group calling itself the Armed Citizen Project will be visiting 15 cities throughout the country to hand out shotguns to citizens. Yes, you heard right, hand out shotguns to citizens for their protection against crime. Those who want shotguns will receive them after being fingerprinted and fill out paperwork for background checks. Among the cities that the Armed Citizen Project will visit will be New York and Chicago. The goal of the Armed Citizen Project is to provide firearms for those who, because of restrictive local or state laws, cannot buy or obtain them. The Armed Citizen Project has already distributed shotguns in Houston, Texas.
Doing so in New York and Chicago will be a lot more tricky. These two cities are known for having the most restrictive gun laws in the country. There will be no doubt that the Armed Citizen Project will be trampling on some very big toes in order to distribute shotguns to anyone for any reason. Those who are part of the tour could actually be arrested in either New York or Chicago for doing this. Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that no city or state can totally ban firearms in the country, some locales like Chicago and New York have instead made laws that make it next to impossible and too expensive to buy and own a firearm for any ordinary citizen.
In fact, Chicago is doing what it can to fight legislation for concealed and carry for handguns for not just the city and county but also for the whole state. Illinois and the District of Columbia are the only places in the United States where it is still illegal to get a permit to conceal and carry handguns. There is no question that the Armed Citizen Project is trying to challenge this, and challenge any restrictions on those eligible to be able to obtain firearms for protection. I see one huge and just as equally drawn out legal battle coming up in short order.
