Governor Quinn signed legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) that streamlines investigations in cases of child abuse and neglect in the Illinois Senate. Senate Bill 106 allows counselors, doctors, and other medical professionals to provide information to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) during ongoing abuse or neglect cases without reasonable suspicion.

“This legislation will provide DCFS with vital evidence to do what is in the child’s best interest,” Senator Martinez said. “Senate Bill 106 will help investigators get a comprehensive view of different aspects in child abuse cases and these updates to the process will better protect Illinois families.” According to DCFS, it is difficult for the State’s Attorney to gather evidence in abuse or neglect proceedings that involve professionals who are not required to report during an investigation.

The legislation also requires DCFS to provide the informant with a letter confirming the information was used in the course of a child abuse or neglect investigation. The new law goes into effect immediately.
