In an effort to reduce teenage smoking, state Rep. Camille Lilly, D-Chicago, is sponsoring House Bill 4297 to increase the legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. “Our youth do not need to be bombarded by the temptations of tobacco, when they should be focused on their academic careers and extracurricular activities,” Lilly said. “Raising the age to buy harmful tobacco products will help dissuade young people from wanting to obtain and use them.” Lilly’s House Bill 4297 raises the state’s legal age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 and requires retailers of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, or alternative nicotine products ask anyone who appears to be under the age of 30 to show valid identification. Through this legislation, Lilly is attempting to provide an alternative to youth who are targeted by the tobacco industry to buy their harmful products. Lilly represents the 78th District, which includes parts of Chicago, Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Oak Park, Melrose Park and River Grove.
