The Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois (HLAI) and the Puerto Rican Bar Association of Illinois (PRBA) announced that it will send more than 20 attorneys into polling places in the 25thWard to address the allegations of election fraud, vote-buying and other tactics used in the ward during the February 26 Election. The announcement was made during a press conference at City Hall on March 22nd. “The allegations of fraud taking place in one of Chicago’s most vibrant Mexican communities is shocking and will not be tolerated by our organization without a fight,” said Juan Morado Jr., president of HLAI. “We will be fielding over 20 attorneys on Election Day, and we are working with the Chicago Lawyers for Civil Rights to train poll watchers and attorney volunteers.” Claudia Badillo, president of the PRBA stated that “PRBA is proud to partner with HLAI on this important effort. No voter should be disenfranchised and our role as attorneys is to uphold the law and serve our community.” Multiple allegations of unlawful vote-buying practices during the 25thWard Municipal General Election were first brought to light by volunteer attorneys with the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and are currently being investigated by three government agencies, including the Cook County State’s Attorney, the Illinois Attorney General, and the Chicago Board of Elections.
