Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García and Illinois elected officials State Representative, 4thDistrict Delia Ramirez, State Representative, 18thDistrict Robyn Gabel, and Cook County Board Commissioner, 7thDistrict Alma E. Anaya, and community healthcare providers and advocates convened at AMITA Health Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center with the Healthy Illinois Campaign to launch House Bill 0072, which will expand Medicaid eligibility to immigrants that have a valid social security number or a work permit, as long as they meet all other eligibility requirements, including income level. This change primarily benefits Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) who have had their status less than five years and who are currently unable to access Medicaid due to their immigration status or period of residency. Currently, many lawfully present immigrants, including DACA recipients and Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs/green card holders) with their status under five years, pay state and federal taxes, yet do not have access to the Medicaid health coverage which they assist in funding. As a result, a sizable number of these immigrant groups do not have access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance. Four out of ten DACA-eligible residents do not have health coverage, and 5,732 LPRs are currently uninsured and meet the income requirements for Medicaid.
