A Lyons Police squad car pulled over a vehicle on a routine traffic stop involving excessive speeding at around 5:45 PM on Ogden Avenue between White and Leland Streets in the Village of Lyons on Tuesday. Immediately, the male driver jumped out of the car and began firing a weapon at the police officer. The male suspect got back into the vehicle and immediately drove off. There were two passengers, one male and one female, in the vehicle at the time, along with the driver. Lyons Police gave chase with support from other police units and from nearby police departments. The driver abandoned the vehicle near the 8000 block of 42nd Street and all three passengers fled on foot.
The two passengers, male and female, were immediately apprehended. The driver of the car was captured around 7 pm near 7800 West Ogden Avenue. The suspect’s name is Ricardo Soto, 24 years of age. Lyons Police received support from the Chicago Police which have a helicopter in the area and from several suburban police agencies including the State Police, McCook, Riverside, Berwyn, and Forrest View. “The safety of all of our citizens is a number one priority in the Village of Lyons and it requires a strong, effective and professional police force which we have,” said Mayor Christopher Getty following the arrest of the suspect. I applaud the fast action from the Village of Lyons Police in responding to the crime and for their arrest of the suspect. Fortunately, no one was injured. The quick professionalism of our police who put their lives on the line every day to protect our residents ensured that no one was injured after the initial incident. I know the entire community is grateful.”
