Students from Cicero School District 99 rallied to help fellow students whom were victimized by the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. On Tuesday, students from District 99 kindergarten through 8th grade were allowed to wear jeans during school hours by donating one dollar to benefit the young victims of Hurricane Harvey. “I am proud of our students whom thought about this idea to raise funds for those in dyer situations, our students are learning to be sociably responsible leaders and igniting the future for others to follow,” stated Dr. Jack Rein, MTSS Director for District 99. Houston, Texas School districts are surveying the damage to classrooms, and many teachers will likely need help recuperating lost supplies. Cicero School District 99 is dedicated to support teachers rebuild and restock their classrooms with materials, such as books, furniture, classroom supplies, technology, and resources. “The young people of our schools are giving by nature and are becoming leaders in the schools and the communities they live in; I am touched by their willingness and generosity to help those in greater need than themselves. La Representante Estatal Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernández, D-Cicero, presentará su feria anual de recursos “Universidad para Todos”, el sábado, 23 de septiembre, de 10 a.m. a 2 p.m. en el Edificio C del Morton College, localizado en 3801 S. Central Ave., en Cicero. “Mi feria anual de recursos Universidad para Todos es mi evento favorito del año, porque da a padres y estudiantes la oportunidad de conocer los recursos disponibles en la comunidad y poner la universidad más a su alcance”, dijo la Rep. Hernández. Los participantes en el evento “Universidad para Todos” de este año incluirán a representantes de la Comisión de Asistencia Estudiantil de Illinois, la Oficina del Procurador General, la oficina del Controlador, la oficina del Secretario de Estado, la Coalición Pro Derechos de Refugiados e Inmigrantes de Illinois y el Consulado Mexicano. El evento tendrá una presentación de ayuda financiera (FAFSA), información sobre como renovar las licencias de manejo y una discusión sobre los esfuerzos de la Rep. Hernández de ampliar la eligibilidad de ayuda financiera. Adicionalmente, debido a actuales desarrollos con el programa DACA, los residentes recibirán ayuda con su papeleo de renovación de DACA. Estudiantes del Distrito Escolar 99 de Cicero hicieron una manifestación para ayudar a sus compañeros estudiantes que sufrieron el embate del huracán Harvey. El martes, estudiantes del Distrito 99, de kindergarten a 8º grado, tuvieron permiso de usar jeans durante el horario escolar, donando un dólar para beneficio de las jóvenes víctimas del Huracán Harvey. “Me siento orgulloso de nuestros estudiantes que tuuvieron esta idea de recaudar fondos para quienes están en situaciones difíciles, nuestros etudiantes están aprendiendo a ser socialmente líderes responsables y delinear el futuro para que otros los sigan”, declaró el Dr. Jack Rein, Director MTSS del Distrito 99. Los distritos escolares de Houston, Texas están estudiando el daño a los salones de clases y muchos maestros probablemente necesitan ayudar a recuperar los útiles escolares perdidos. El programa de Becas Star de los Colegios de la Ciudad de Chicago (CCC) anunció cinco nuevos colegios y universidades socios de Transferencia Star hoy, llegando a un total de 20 escuelas de cuatro años que dan Becas Star a quienes se gradúan de becas adicionales de los Colegios de la Ciudad para terminar su diploma de bachillerato. La Universidad St. Xavier, Kendall College, Marquette University, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale e Illinois State University se unen a 15 socios de transferencia Star de 4 años cuyas becas a Estudiantes Star van de $1,000 a $50,000 al año. Más de $1 millón en fondos de becas adicionales han sido ofrfecido a los Estudiantes Star a través de estas afiliaciones de transferencia a la fecha. La Universidad Loyola ha ofrecido la mayoría de becas a la fecha ($425,000); la Universidad de Illinois en Chicago ha aceptado a la mayoría de Estudiantes Star a la fecha (122); y CME Group, primer socio corporado del programa ha entregado a los estudiantes 25 becas de $5,000 y conectado a 5 estudiantes de CCC con internados pagados de verano en firmas comerciales elite.

La semana pasada, Jaime di Paulo, director ejecutivo de la Cámara de Comercio de La Villita de Chicago, dedicó el desfile del Día de la Independencia Mexicana Anual No. 48 a los jóvenes indocumentados traídos a E.U. cuando niños, conocidos como “Los Soñadores”. Como seguimiento a esta dedicación, la Cámara de Comercio de La Villita se está asociando con la compañía de software con base en Chicago, Road to Status, para ofrecer un taller gratis de renovación de DACA, tanto en línea como en persona, el viernes, 22 de septiembre en el centro de carreras Central States SER en 3948 w. 26th St, Suite 213. Este evento es posible con el apoyo y la colaboración de Fwd.us Central States SER e Illinois Legal Aid online. “Los Soñadores que necesiten preparar su solicitud de renovación de DACA antes de que expire su protección legal, puede asistir al evento del 22 de septiembre o accesar a una línea de ayuda de pepeleo gratis de inmigración a través de la Cámara de Comercio de la Villita, desde ahora hasta la fecha límite del 5 de octubre impuesta por la administración”. Road to Status está brindadndo un software y los servicios adicionales de la revisión de un abogado, GRATIS, a través de esta afiliación, hasta la fecha límite del 5 de octubre. Las revisiones de abogados están disponibles vía su red de afiliados de firmas de abogados. El paquete de solicitud de renovación de DACA de Road to Status es típicamente $148.00 en línea, pero los costos son perdonados por eventos afiliados hasta el 5 de octubre del 2017 fecha límite. For Ashburn resident Guadalupe “Nelly” Fabila entering the IT field is a dream come true. “Ever since I could remember I’ve always had a passion for math and science. I was always interested in those topics and excelled at them,” said Fabila, who was able to have her dream realized as an intern for ADM Investor Services in the IT Development department thanks in large part to the CME Group’s Star Scholar Mayoral Award. “I heard about this opportunity through my school and I just took advantage of the opportunity,” said Fabila who was selected from a group of eligible candidates. As recipient of the award, Fabila is helping to write code for proprietary programs the firm is developing. Fabila is just one of many who have benefitted from the CME Group Foundation as they granted more than $2 million to 14 organizations in Illinois to support STEM education initiatives from pre-kindergarten through college.

Projects receiving funding and strategic support range from professional development programming for teachers of young children in underprivileged Illinois communities to LEAP Innovations, a Chicago-based education innovation hub that connects educators and technology innovators to research, pilot and scale personalized learning strategies to transform the way kids learn.  As part of its grants, CME Group Foundation renewed its support of LEAP Innovations, one of the key organizations in Chicago that is fostering change in the classroom. Additionally, CME Group Foundation is the largest donor to Chicago Public Schools’ Computer Science 4 All (CS4All) program, an initiative to make computer science a core curriculum in Chicago Public Schools. CPS is the only major metropolitan school district in the country to require computer science coursework for graduation, beginning with the class of 2020. In addition to funding the program, CME Group is offering two CPS teachers the opportunity to learn about technology through an externship with the company this summer. “I am super grateful to CME Group for providing me this opportunity to reach my goals,” said Fabila, who is currently a student at Dominican University where she will major in computer science. “After graduation I hope to give back to my community and teach a younger generation about the exciting careers in STEM, such as computer science and coding.”

On Tuesday evening at Benito Juarez High School, Alderman Daniel Solis announced a contribution of $30,000 for DACAFUND.org to cover the legal fees and filing costs for 50 Benito Juarez students who will require assistance to renew their Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Alderman Solis asked all elected officials to work with their schools and community partners to assure that no DACA student does not apply for lack of funds. Alderman Solis made the announcement at Benito Juarez Tuesday evening, one week after the Trump administration announced their rescission of DACA. DACA provides temporary immigration relief and work authorization. It has benefitted more than 800,000 young people across the country and over 42,000 Illinoisans have deferred action.

Though DACA is ending, those whose status will expire between September 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018 have until October 5, 2017 renew their work permits. The renewal, which costs $495, will give recipients two more years of employment authorization and protection from deportation. Alderman Solis’s donation is intended to support those students who may otherwise not be able to afford to renew their status. Approximately 250 Benito Juarez students have DACA, of those around 50 are qualified to renew before the October 5th deadline. “Ending DACA is unthinkable,” said Alderman Solis. “We must do everything possible to protect the kids who have benefitted from it. That begins with supporting those who can apply for renewal so they can continue going to school, contributing to their communities and live with dignity and without fear of deportation.”

When I found out that our students only had one month to apply, I knew funds would become an obstacle,” said Benito Juarez Principal Juan Carlos Ocon. “The Alderman’s announcement ensures that every Benito Juarez student who needs to renew can do so, and will be protected from deportation for two more years.” We commend Alderman Solis’s commitment to students with DACA,” said Erendira Rendon, Director of National Partnerships at The Resurrection Project. “Times are tough and our community is hurting. Solis’s leadership offers hope to the students affected at a critical time.”
